We foster a culture where people who are humble, hungry, and smart are truly valued, supported, and promoted from within. Sabey is deeply committed to being a responsible community partner, returning unused energy to grids and collaborating with local utilities for sustainable impact. While competitors may offer higher salaries, few can match Sabey's positive culture, purpose-driven mission, and long-term career growth opportunities.

About This Role

As the Data Center Mechanical Project Engineer, you will join Sabey's Data Center Design team and support the design, operation, and continuous improvement of mission-critical mechanical infrastructure. Working closely with internal stakeholders and external engineering consultants, you’ll contribute to highly reliable, efficient, and maintainable cooling systems that support critical data center operations.

This role offers broad exposure to the mechanical systems at the heart of mission-critical facilities, including chilled water systems, chiller plants, CRAH/CRAC units, piping systems, heat rejection equipment, and associated infrastructure. For a mechanical engineer with 3+ years of experience, it’s an opportunity to deepen your technical expertise while contributing across design, construction, commissioning, operations, reliability, and system optimization.

Your Contribution Will Likely Include

  • Supporting the design and development of mechanical systems for new and expanding data center projects, including chilled water systems, chiller plants, CRAH/CRAC units, piping systems, heat rejection equipment, and associated infrastructure.
  • Collaborating with Architecture & Engineering (A&E) firms to ensure designs align with Owner Project Requirements (OPR), Sabey design standards, and technical specifications.
  • Developing and maintaining mechanical engineering standards, specifications, and design guidelines.
  • Participating in equipment sizing and selection, hydraulic calculations, and technical evaluations of mechanical systems.
  • Reviewing engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and technical submittals for quality, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Providing engineering support to operating data centers for infrastructure upgrades, optimization efforts, capacity expansions, maintenance projects, and energy-efficiency initiatives.
  • Supporting reliability engineering efforts, including failure investigations, root cause analyses, lifecycle planning, equipment performance evaluations, and reliability improvement projects.
  • Developing recommendations to improve mechanical system availability, maintainability, resilience, and long-term performance.
  • Coordinating with electrical, controls, construction, commissioning, and operations teams throughout project execution.
  • Supporting commissioning, startup, functional performance testing, and turnover to operations.
  • Staying current with ASHRAE guidance, applicable mechanical codes, and emerging cooling technologies relevant to mission-critical facilities.
  • Traveling to job sites as needed and safely navigating active construction environments.

Experience You Will Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 3+ years of mechanical design or project engineering experience within commercial, industrial, mission-critical, or data center facilities.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, hydronic piping, air distribution, ventilation, heat transfer, mechanical equipment selection, and controls coordination.
  • Understanding of data center cooling systems, including CRAH/CRAC units, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, economizers, containment strategies, and temperature/humidity control.
  • Ability to support cooling load and airflow calculations, duct and pipe sizing, equipment schedules, construction documents, submittal reviews, RFI responses, and construction administration.
  • Ability to coordinate mechanical design across electrical, architectural, structural, civil, controls/BMS, fire protection, telecom, and construction disciplines.
  • Familiarity with data center redundancy, resiliency, maintainability, and critical cooling concepts.
  • Strong analytical, engineering, mathematical reasoning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams, consultants, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment without compromising quality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and Microsoft Project.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, including a willingness to learn and utilize AI tools and emerging technologies.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE standards and applicable building codes is preferred.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is preferred.
  • Exposure to commissioning, reliability engineering, chilled water systems, or large-scale HVAC design is preferred.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, and mechanical design software is a plus.
